If you’ve been on line today and read today’s paper, you would’ve seen the sub-heading about the start that the Nyack softball team is off too but I didn’t get to expand on it like I wanted to so I decided to expand on it here:
The Indians had a 7-5 record through Tuesday, and are coming off a third-place finish in their Nyack Red and Black Tournament last weekend.
With wins over Conference IV League B rivals Nanuet and Albertus Magnus, the Indians couldn’t be more happy with their start.
“So far, this season has been filled with nothing but accomplishments and improvement,” Indians senior Alex Bacalan said. “We started off our season with three straight wins, and are currently 7-5.
“I’m so proud of my team and how far we’ve come. I’ve seen a lot of growth with each player, and together as a team we have become really strong offensively and defensively.”
Last weekend’s Red and Black tournament at Germonds Park was a big learning experience for the Indians.
“We came out to a slow start the first game vs. Dobbs Ferry,” Indians sophomore Tiffany Salcito said. “Coming off a hard lost it didn’t get us down for the second game vs Sleepy Hollow. Mackenzie Johnson pitched a great game for us, she was locked in and focus and are bats were helping her as well. We ended up with a big win 5 to 0.
Even though we didn’t win the tournament this year, we did good.”
One of things that they attribute to the good start this season is the adding of travel players including Salcito, Megan Sneeden, Michaela Contreras, Jenna Lane, and Mackenzie Johnson.
“We all bring different aspects of the game back to are high school team,” Salcito said. “Giving them advice we learned from travel to help us through the season.
Also are coaching has been great this year. Coach (Stephanie) Ryan and Coach (Vinnie) Cuccia started us off early in the year. We have many indoor open gyms just to hit some balls and get grounders. You can tell how much that helped us espically with that extra practice we had. It gave us more time to get used to one another and be in sync with each other.”
Indians senior Alex Bacalan attributes it to the team’s focus.
“One of the key factors in winning a game is confidence,” Bacalan said. “You start the game confident, play the game with confidence, and leave the game confidently – win or lose. Having faith in our team is what really makes us fight.”
And as we get closer to the end of the regular season and the start, the Indians know what they need to do if they want to make a run a stacked Class A highlighted by Pearl River, Eastchester, Ursuline, and Tappan Zee.
“We need to be confident in ourselves and never give up,” Sneeden said. “If we are confident and don’t give up, we can win any game, against any team.”
